In New York City, rideshare drivers must have commercial auto insurance. This is required by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).
The type of insurance that covers a driver depends on which phase of the rideshare process they're in:
Phase 0: The app is off.
Phase 1: The app is on, but the driver is waiting for a request.
Phase 2: The driver has accepted a request and is on the way to pick up the passenger.
Phase 3: The passenger is in the vehicle and ends when the passenger exits.
